Dow Nasdaq

I am puzzled about the number that represents the thing Dow Jones arrow. As it shows a big red arrow goes up / down and a bell freaking boring. There are people in the beating of substance, too. There are figures as the Nasdaq / Dow Jones fell x number of points. What the points mean?
